Janet Sewell Missionary to Europe

Less than 2.5% of Europeans actively follow Christ

Europe. One of the major cultural centers of the world with its many countries, diverse regional culinary delights, fashion, and architecture. The birthplace of modern day philosophy. The place where the reformation and the Renaissance took place. The cradle of Christianity and once the largest missionary sending force of its time. Europe has definitely risen throughout the ages, and as we’ve climbed, we’ve also walked away from the Lord.

Christianity has become part of the culture, it has fallen to the wayside and most Europeans are nominal Christians at best. According to The Cambridge Companion to Atheism, 19 out of the 25 counties with the highest percentage of atheists, agnostics or people who claim not to believe in God, are European. Sweden is considered the foremost atheistic country in the world. With only 2.5% of Europeans actively following the Lord, there are more Evangelicals in Kenya, one country in Africa, than in all of Europe.

Europe is in desperate need of the Gospel!

always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have But do this with gentleness and respect

1 Peter 3:15a

Christianity is under attack in Europe. Yes, most people have heard the name Jesus, but few understand or even realize what a personal relationship with Him means. With the rise of Islam and other religions, as well as atheism, I believe that we need to reach Europe on a larger scale than what we’ve been doing.

Face to face evangelism is vital. One on one conversations are indispensable. And the local church is needed to reach out to their local communities through events, social action and anything relevant to their neighborhood. What I would like to offer is an added layer to all of these. Online apologetics.

Young people today are extremely visual and spend a lot of time browsing the Internet, making this a huge resource for broad scale evangelism. Statistics say that the second largest search engine on the web after Google, is YouTube. Add Facebook and other social networking sites to the mix, and we’ve got a very powerful tool. My desire is to challenge young people and answer their questions in fun and creative ways using short videos and multimedia to ultimately lead them to Christ and the Truth.

The application for such a ministry is vast. People could use these videos as a tool in school during debates, to use during sermons, to start discussions, download on their smart phones or iPods and use during evangelism, not to mention sharing these videos online with their friends through the various social media. The possibilities for such videos are endless!

A secondary aspect to these videos is for training purposes. For example, what is New Age all about? How do I reach my Muslim neighbor? What do the Mormons believe? There is a huge need for good training videos. We often are afraid of sharing our faith with those around us because of a fear of not knowing the answers to the various questions.

My goal is to provide such videos to reach the lost and to help Christians share their faith with boldness.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matthew 28:19-20

ΤΑΞΙΔΙ is the Greek word for journey and this is mine.

Hi, my name is Janet Sewell and I am European. I’m actually as European as they get! I was born in Iceland to a French mother and an English dad. And while I spent cold winters in Iceland, I spent warm summers in the South of France with my grandparents, in essence navigating and living in three different cultures from a very young age. In 2004, just two weeks after graduating high-school, I left Iceland for an adventure of my own. I moved to Greece and became a missionary with Hellenic Ministries. I have been in Greece since then.

In 2009 the Lord took me to South Africa on another adventure. I went there to do an internship in radio production. Prior to leaving I was praying and asking the Lord to give me a vision for a niche within this vast world of media. Everybody has something to say and I wanted something fresh and different from the Lord. I spent a week praying about it and the Lord answered through an apologetics video. As I watched this video, everything clicked for me. My love of research, reading, learning, photography, and media, all of my artistic and technology sides focused into one very specific outlet for one purpose: to make the Lord known to an unbelieving world through videos.

It quickly became apparent to me that I needed more training in the realm of apologetics so I started reading and listening a lot more to apologetics talks. Upon listening to one of Ravi Zacharias’ podcasts I heard about the Oxford Center for Christian Apologetics, OCCA for short. I got in touch with them and applied. To my delight they accepted me and in September of 2011 I made my way to Oxford for an incredible year of apologetics and theology.

I am now in the process of transitioning within Hellenic Ministries into what will hopefully be full time apologetics.

I wasn't always a Christian. My parents are New Age and so I was raised as such. It wasn't until my teenage years that the Lord captivated my heart.

What does this statement mean? Well in my case, it means that I work for an organization called Hellenic Ministries. Within this ministry, since the Lord has gifted me in many different areas, I am able to do a lot of different things. These range from sailing to sound engineering to acquiring rights for book translations into Greek. I love my job and I wouldn’t want to do anything other than what I am doing.
